RE/ Notes - Phd meeting - 24th Feb

Hello Bianca
Many thanks for the notes

1. Internal Seminar Series
a)Great idea to learn more about Bill and His work
b) I think the 1 to 1 aspect of a Phd Surgery would also be good- will we
need to book this in advance
C) with the internal seminar series not every one is a full time Phd
student, so would be great to have some sessions that are later in the day
or 1/2 day - giving part-timers a better option of attending

2. Another Thursday the end of March
a) great idea re theme of "documentation"
b) would be good to identifiy as a group what we define as documentation,
or what is defined as documentation in a Mphil/Phd, does this change if you
are doing a practice based Phd ???
c) An example of a practitioner who is doing this process and the issues
related to it would be good
d) a collection of supporting text that explore the methodology of
documentation would also be good- any susggestions ( content to support
this can placed on learn.gold)

3. 5th May
The workshop on Mapping
a) would be great to have greater clarification on the concept of mapping,
in relation to the seminar
b) is this a whole day workshop and what is the context??

4. 21st June
As all the other workshops are goldsmiths based it would be good to have a
workshop/field trip off site: logistics/costs etc need to be considered
it might be good to use aspects of our own research practice to explore the
notion of workshops etc
e.g a collaborative film e.g some are using film as a from of collecting
data, but are not sure how to use software to edit this and the process,
involved
many of the art& design museums offer workshops some free that could be
tailored to the group
lots to think about

5. Open lecture series
A good idea, but needs long term planning, if thinking of bringing in guest
speakers, then will need to think in terms of budget for travelling
expenses, and or speakers fees
Might also draw on the lecturers from other departments in goldsmiths
You would need to draw up a plan in advance and book at least a term ahead
again - think about flexibility of the day, it does not need to be a whole
day, but could be a focussed am or pm session
Also we would also need to get a list of all the topic areas we all are
covering to then identitfy speakers etc

6. Thursday lunch
I hope I can at least make one of these, unfortunately I am a part-timer
and this is also the 1 day that I teach all day- so would not always be
able to attend, but would be great to meet others. and discuss future
tactics

7. Blog
We do need a central depository for both internal viewing and external
exposure
as well as central area for depositing central information related to the
course etc

For external profile
a)There are already some student profiles on the Design Dept website :
<http://www.gold.ac.uk/design/research/student-research-profiles/>
b)A link to The Blog for the research students could be added to this page:
need to decide on the blog type and who will take care of it??b) the
department already has a blog space <http://goldsmithsdesignblog.com/> -
there could be a link added here as well. Also not everyone knows how to
use a blog, there soul be clear instructions for upload etc to avoid
accidents
c) The aim should really be for all research students in the department to
have a profile uploaded here with the ability to have it updated as and
when

For internal
To make better use of learn.gold -especially for information related to
course and events

Mahara ( internal version of Facebookish) without the ads
You access by logging on learn.gold then clicking on Mahara icon
It has various functions, including a blog space, the ability to link
people and groups as well as video/audio/rss feeds
Might be good to set up on this in the internal support can be given.
Might be good to set up a group session with Dr Mira Vogel
(m.vogel@gold.ac.uk) in The Goldsmiths Enhancement unit to arrange a
session on the use of Mahara and how as phd students you can use for both
group and individual options
Obviously there are other options to think about

Regards

Rose Sinclair
